Top 10 Mistakes to Avoid When Moving House

Moving to your new home can be what you’ve thought and dreamed about for years. You may be moving to an avenue you’ve always wanted to live in, or perhaps a house with a garden big enough for your ambitions. It’s one of life’s special events.

Needless to say, however, moving house is one of the most stressful things you can do. If everything goes right, you’ll be exhausted but happy. If something goes wrong, on the other hand, it can get your adventure at the new house off to the wrong start. Our job is to make things perfect for you.

At Grants Removals we have many years of experience at making the process as painless and enjoyable as possible. Over time we’ve helped hundreds of families with their moves and noticed a lot of the mistakes they tend to make. We don’t want you to make the same mistakes, so here is the first of our ten very important pointers on what we hope you won’t be doing on the big day!

Mistake 1 – You Don’t Plan For It

You may have heard this aphorism before: fail to plan = plan to fail.

Leaving your old home to live in a different place is a surprisingly difficult and time-consuming thing to do. After looking for a new place to live, you end your tenancy or sell your old home. You then sign a tenancy agreement or jump over all the hurdles put in your way by mortgage paperwork. You probably then think you’re through the worst of it. Not necessarily!

Moving house is a major operation, one that demands respect. It also demands that you invest enough time to make it a success.

The first thing you need to do after deciding that you’re moving is sit down and make a plan. Workout how you’re going to physically transport your belongings from the old house to the new one (Grants Removals would love to help you with that). Think practically and never be caught without a tape measure and notebook at hand.

Measure the furniture you’ll be taking with you and make sure
(a) that you can get it through doors without needing to saw it in half and
(b) that you have room to put it in your new house.

The worst outcome would be to go to the trouble of bringing something all the way over to your newhome and finding that it doesn’t fit or blocks your access.

We can give you the move your belongings deserve, so when it comes to the day itself, let Grants Removals know about everything that needs particular care and attention.

Such as? Your valuable but fragile antiques, your computers and treasured pictures. Let us know before the moving day if you have any items that might need specialist help, such as a piano, which might need to be moved out of the old place and into the new via a window. The more you can tell us about what you’ll be taking with you, the better the day of the move will go.

Del Says…

“The best, smoothest moves we’ve done over the years haven’t happened by accident. They’ve been when our customers have taken a few minutes to plan out what they want from their moving day and from us. The most successful removals happen when we and the customer work like a team.”
